Ceramic-coated cookware is not made with Teflon and does not contain PFAS. This type of cookware (I love this Caraway Cookware Set) has a ceramic non-stick coating made from natural inorganic materials that are safe to use with all foods (FDA approved).
PROS
- This cookware is easy on the wrists because it is light and small. Its surface is very easy to clean and doesn’t stick.
- The coating on the inside doesn’t react with acidic foods, and you don’t need much or any oil to cook your food.
CONS
- With this kind of cookware, you can’t use metal tools. With my Caraway Fry Pan, I use this Silicone Mixing Spoon and this Silicone Slotted Spatula.
- I also store my pan in a protective bag so I don’t scratch the surface. At the very least, don’t stack other pans on top of ceramic-coated pans.
The coating is usually made of silicon and oxygen, and it keeps the food from touching the metal base that transfers heat to the food.
Since the ceramic coating doesn’t have PFOA and PFAS, which are the things we worry about in Teflon, maybe they are less dangerous.
But studies and a lot of user reviews have shown that these pans either don’t work or stop working after a few weeks or months, at which point they are thrown away.
We don’t think it sounds very “green.” If you buy green pans made outside of the country, the ceramic coating may even have lead and cadmium in it, which is bad for both adults and kids.
Like non-stick pans, once the ceramic coating has been scratched or broken, you can’t really use it anymore because the aluminum base is exposed and can get into your food. In the end, these things aren’t the answer.
